I’ve escaped from the Christmas Tree Barn and indulged in a little domesticity. Every summer I take some wheat from the heap in the barn to use through the year, taking it out of the plastic bin to grind it into flour as I need it. The gluten level is down a bit this year so I have to add some bought strong white flour but the flavour is better than any shop bought wholemeal flour and a loaf fresh out of the oven smells of harvest time.
Today I’ve been making Christmas huffers. Just ordinary huffers made with 60% wholemeal flour with chopped walnuts and dried cranberries added to the dough. I know that throwing in some cranberries doesn’t really make something Christmassy but it’s good enough for me. I think I shall eat them with cheddar cheese.
